What a weird bug! Thank you for your post. I uninstalled Malwarebytes (the free version, but it had been installed only a few days ago, so it was the trial version of the full program) as you described, and I could save to the Desktop in Word 2016.
I had to use Task Manager to end the Word process. Before considering an upgrade, please be aware that Time Matters 13 and higher do not include Billing Matters Accounting feature functionality.

In some machines we find that word crashes whenever our addin is enabled and when we try a File save (CTRL + S) or programmatically attempt save in our code using the API word.save() we get the following exception in our log System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object at. I am posting here because I could not find any help anywhere, I figure this post may help someone. So I uninstalled it and not Word works again. So if the file you were working on was called 'My New Word File.docx', then the last auto-saved version would be called 'AutoRecovery of My New Word File.asd'. I had installed the free version right around the time the problem started. The file name will be the same as the name of the file you were working on but with 'AutoRecovery save of' at the start. The answer (after much hair-pulling-out) was that MalwareBytes was the issue. Word froze every time I selected “Save As” then “desktop” as the location. I had this start to happen about 2 weeks ago, it was driving me crazy.
